About me

I currently reside in Woodinville, WA, with my trusty doggo Max. I graduated with a BA in Design and a Minor in Film from Seattle University in March 2021. I graduated with Honors from Shoreline Community College (SCC) with an Associate of Fine Arts and concentration in Graphic Design. I have four years of experience working for premium brands in print production, retail sales, and customer service.

I discovered my passion for UX/UI Design during my web design class at SCC when I learned about the importance of human-computer interactions and got to wireframe and prototype for the first time. I decided to attend Seattle University for its values-based education and study design. After graduating from SU I knew I wanted to apply my design skills to the UX/UI field so I enrolled in a 12-Week UX Bootcamp at General Assembly (GA).

At GA, I gained the skills and knowledge to execute UX projects from start to finish. After completing GA, I was hired to design and develop theswemschool.com — a client project that I worked on while at GA. Currently, I'm looking for full-time opportunities in UX/UI or Graphic Design while doing freelance design work on the side.

My journey

How I became a digital and UX/UI designer.

Childhood

As a kid I would create a carnival with mini-games, prizes, and tickets for my parents to attend. I love to create characters — mostly in the form of comedy, superheroes, and monsters. My early influences were Homestar Runner, Captain Underpants, and Reptar. I never studied drawing, I just drew, usually in the margins of my homework which I cluttered with doodles. I was serving as the back page layout designer for my high school newspaper when my journalism teacher discovered one of my sketches and featured it on the front cover. It was the first time I thought of myself as an artist, but I never thought I would pursue a creative career. I spent a few years working in retail trying to figure out my future, but it wasn’t until I got a job working in print production at FedEx Office that it finally clicked, and I realized that I wanted to be a designer.

FedEx

At FedEx, I worked full-time in print production for two years. The grave-yard shift at the main Bellevue office handled large business print jobs that were too big to complete during the day. It was here that I got my introduction to graphic design. I learned Adobe Creative Suite so I could help my clients with design changes to their print files. When I found myself using Illustrator just for fun, I decided to return to school and study design.

Shoreline College

I chose to attend Shoreline Community College (SCC) because they offered an Associate in Fine Arts with a concentration in graphic design. By completing an extra year of credits, I was able to develop a solid foundation in traditional fine arts and pursue my passion for Drawing, Typography, Photography, and UI design. During my foundation years at SCC, I became a graphic designer, I discovered my passion for UX/UI design, and developed the following creative skills:

Animation

Logos

Photography

Seattle University

I decided to attend SeattleU for its values-based education and small class size. While completing my BA in Design, I also completed a Minor in Film Studies, and I learned how to create short films/videos:

Films/Videos

I also developed a passion for Motion Graphics which I’ve incorporated into many of my designs. I learned how to use Adobe After Effects to create these motion graphic shorts:

General Assembly

The GA 12-Week Immersive UX Bootcamp is designed to help college graduates from non-design disciplines acquire the skill and experience to pursue a new career in UX design. UX design only requires a minimum level of competency in GraphicDesign, because most UX Designers work in tandem with Graphic Designers who create the visual assets. By the time I attended the GA UX Bootcamp, I had two degrees in graphic design, which allowed me to be a visual design leader for my group projects and to focus my attention on the UX portion of the curriculum. For example, I created a new logo for The SWEM School which was not part of the project requirements, and the visual designs that I created for our team project were the primary reason that our client hired us to turn the designs into a fully functional website.

FAQ

Why Should I Hire Dylan Sears?

If you’re looking for a skilled UX/UI or Graphic Designer, I’ve spent the last 5 years preparing for both jobs. Some candidates may have one skill or the other, but very few will be adequately skilled at both. I believe my portfolio demonstrates quality work in both visual and user designs.

Most jobs specialize in one area — and I can do that — but I believe that great creative teams need individuals who are multi-skilled. In addition to my UX/UI and Graphic Design experience, I also have two years of full-time print production and customer service experience at FedEx Office. I can design logos, take photographs, edit videos, create motion graphics, and write copy. I want to be a fundamental part of your team and work together to help create successful designs.
